Living in Miami was a very unhappy experience for me, as I'm sure you've surmised if you've read even Part I of Miami 1986.
I mention this because I know the tone of this story is a little somber for an Old Saleswoman story. Normally the Old Saleswoman is bouncing around -- ready to take on the world, or at least give it a try. But by the time I moved to Miami I was getting very tired and I suppose it comes out in the story. Still I think it's a good story that gives an honest representation of life in south Florida in the mid-80s. In fact, I'm in the process of revising the ending and expanding the story to novella length.
What's true here? I did work for the yellow pages under the circumstances described. Piper Black is based more or less on one real person. There was a blue glass fish, caviar runs, and shopping at Bal Harbour.
My next story, Al, Miami and Me is also set in Miami and is much more upbeat.
